Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) for UAE Businesses: How to Get Cited by AI Search (2026)

More UAE customers now get an AI-written answer before they see ten blue links. Here is what generative engine optimization (GEO) means, what Google itself says you need to do, what the research found, and a checklist you can apply this month.

Quick Answer

Generative engine optimization (GEO) means making your pages easy for AI search to find, understand and cite. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond good SEO: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. A Princeton-led study found that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources raised visibility in AI answers by 30 to 40 percent, while keyword stuffing did not help. Start with text-first pages, a direct answer under each heading, and real sources.

What GEO Means

AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer a question by pulling from several pages, writing a summary and linking to the sources they used. GEO is the work of making your page one of those sources. It does not replace SEO: a page that Google cannot index cannot be linked from an AI answer either.

What Google Says You Need to Do

Google’s own guidance for site owners is short, and it is worth reading before paying for any “AI SEO” package:

  • The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and there are no additional requirements or special optimizations.
  • To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
  • You do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and there is no special schema.org structured data to add.
  • Both features may use “query fan-out”: several related searches across subtopics to build one answer.
  • Appearances are counted in Search Console under the Web search type, and robots.txt for Googlebot is the control for crawling.

Google adds that indexing and serving are never guaranteed, even when a page meets every requirement.

What the Research Found

The paper that named the field, by researchers from Princeton, IIT Delhi and the Allen Institute for AI (accepted to KDD 2024), tested nine ways of rewriting a web page on a benchmark of 10,000 queries. Adding cited sources, quotations from credible sources and relevant statistics gave relative improvements of 30 to 40 percent on its main visibility metric. A test on Perplexity showed gains of up to 37 percent. Keyword stuffing, the old SEO habit, did not perform well. The authors also found that results varied by topic.

Read this as direction, not a guarantee

The study ran on 2023 and 2024 systems and a research benchmark, not on your market. It supports a clear habit, which is to back claims with numbers and sources, but it cannot promise a specific result for a Dubai business.

What It Means in the UAE

Google brought AI Overviews to the Middle East and North Africa, with Arabic support, on 20 May 2025, and began rolling out AI Mode in Modern Standard Arabic on 8 October 2025. Google also reports that early AI Mode users ask questions two to three times longer than traditional searches. For a UAE company, that means customers now ask full questions in English and Arabic, and the pages that answer a whole question clearly are the ones that fit.

A Dubai clinic, property firm or online shop gains most by covering its own local questions in depth: prices in AED, rules such as consent for WhatsApp marketing, areas served and how to book. Our guide to agentic AI in the UAE follows that pattern.

A 9-Step GEO Checklist for UAE Businesses

  1. 1

Make the page indexable and snippet-eligible

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Check robots.txt, any CDN rules and noindex or nosnippet tags.

  2. 2

Keep the important text in the HTML

Google lists “important content available in textual form” as a basic step. Text that is injected late, hidden in tabs or shown only as images is easy for crawlers and AI tools to miss.

  3. 3

Put a direct answer under the H1

Open each key page with a self-contained summary of 50 to 150 words that answers the main question. This is our own practice, not a Google rule, but it gives AI tools a clean passage to quote.

  4. 4

Add real statistics, quotes and cited sources

In the Princeton-led study these three changes gave the biggest gains. Use figures you can source, name the source and link it.

  5. 5

    Cover the follow-up questions

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches (“query fan-out”). A page with an FAQ and sub-sections for the obvious next questions matches more of those searches.

  6. 6

Publish in English and Arabic where your customers search

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode both support Arabic. If your buyers search in Arabic, an English-only page is invisible to them.

  7. 7

Make structured data match the page

Google says there is no special schema for AI features, but your structured data must match the visible text. Keep Organization, Article, FAQ and Service markup accurate and current.

  8. 8

    Keep your Business Profile current

Google lists up-to-date Business Profile information among its AI-feature basics. See our Google Business Profile checklist for Dubai.

  9. 9

    Measure it

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. Watch impressions and clicks on your answer-first pages.

What We Changed on Our Own Site

We applied this checklist to phantomcore.io in October and November 2026. Nine service pages were loading their body text through a streaming component, so a crawler that ignores hidden elements saw only 10 to 31 percent of the text. We switched them to server-rendered text, and the visible share rose to between 53 and 98 percent depending on the page. We then added a 134 to 148 word summary under the heading on eight service pages, with a visible “Updated” date that matches the page’s dateModified.

We have not yet measured a change in AI citations from this work, and we will not claim one until we have. The point is that these are changes you can check in the page source yourself.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is the practice of making your content easy for AI search tools such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity to find, understand and cite. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by authors from Princeton, IIT Delhi and the Allen Institute for AI, accepted to KDD 2024.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Mostly it builds on SEO. Google says the same SEO fundamentals apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there are no extra requirements. GEO adds a focus on quotable passages, sources and statistics, because AI tools assemble answers from several pages and link to the ones they used.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AI search?

There is no evidence yet that it helps. Google says you do not need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. See our separate guide to what the 2026 llms.txt data shows.

Do I need special schema markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data to add for AI features. Use accurate structured data that matches the visible page, as you would for normal Search.

How long does it take to be cited by AI search?

Nobody can promise a timeline. Google says indexing and serving are never guaranteed, and that recrawling can take from several days to several months. Start with pages that are already indexed and improve them first.

Do I need Arabic pages to appear in Arabic AI answers?

If you want to be a source for Arabic questions, publish useful Arabic content rather than relying on an English page alone. Google brought AI Overviews to Arabic in May 2025 and AI Mode to Modern Standard Arabic in October 2025.
